What is Marshall-Lewis Academy?
Studies show that all-boys schools offer a welcoming and stimulating educational environment compared to coed schools, including advantages such as male-tailored education, freedom to young men to be themselves, increased ambition to expand ones borders, and the building of brotherhood, amongst several others.
The Marshall-Lewis Academy (MLA) Public Charter School aims to:
- Increase the number of male students that are College and Career Ready (CCR).
- Support the BluePrint for Maryland’s Future (HB1300) by focusing on providing opportunities for male students to graduate from high school with college credits and /or industry certification.
- Increase representation of small business owners through providing targeted curriculum focused on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and economic independence so that graduates can become major contributors to the economy and economic leaders in their respective communities.
Mission Statement
The Marshall-Lewis Academy exists to build the social, emotional, and intellectual capacity of adolescent boys, to equip them with the knowledge and skills to positively impact and compete in an ever-changing global society while increasing the number of boys that meet the College and Career Ready (CCR) graduation requirements and become self-employed in various CTE fields.
Statement of Need
In the state of Maryland from 2015 – 2019:
- Male students, with specific emphasis on males of color graduated at a rate that is 12.7% lower than their peers.
- The percent of male students enrolled in college has been on a consistent decline.
- The percentage of males identified as completing rigorous high school indicators such as CTE completers, and Early College Admissions is significantly lower for males, and specifically males of color.
- Male students, with specific emphasis on males of color are consistently outperformed by their peers on standardized state mathematics assessments by a margin of 30%.
- Male students, with a specific emphasis on males of color are consistently outperformed by their peers on standardized state English Language Arts assessments by a margin of 22.4%. –Maryland School Report Card, 2022
